biography
Dimitris C. Milionis was born in Sydney, Australia in 1960, and is presently living and working in Athens, Greece since 1974.
As a self taught artist, his main points of reference are nature, philosophy and the arts. Milionis has progressed and conquered all major art movements of his time, be that conceptualism, minimalism, abstract art and neo-symbolism. His symbolism is so profound, he has become an iconic figure as concerns twenty-first century Hellenic Neo-Symbolic art.
His symbolism incorporates an inspiration of Greek Archaic and traditional Byzantine art, something that reflects his own inner, metaphysical world, where there is more to the canvas than just meets the eye. Milionis’ life’s work stays true to his roots. His art pays homage to the artists and poets of Ancient Greece as told by antiquity. He achieves this through the projection of symbols of his Aegean heritage and the portrayal of everyday life seen and understood only through the Aegean landscape.
His direct influence from the Modern Greek Masters; De Chirico, Tsarouchis, Eggonopoulos Fassianos and Samios have served as a source of inspiration. As a humanist, his work looks at compassion, history, cultural understanding, equality and justice, concepts which are all too familiar with our own human existence.Milionis portrays his work by telling a story, one that touches upon a strong reality of our present condition, while at the same time provoking the audience to use their creative imagination.
The artist has participated in 8 solo exhibitions in various distinguished galleries in the vicinity of Athens, having achieved, to this day a prestigious circle of collectors around his work. It is worth noting that his art work can be found in the Philosophy Department of the University of Athens, at American Express Bank, Alpha Bank, and in private collections in Greece and abroad.
